US means: group headquarters in the United States. The score is the sovereignty score on every vendor page (0 = high exposure, 100 = sovereign). A selected alternative is on the list we compile by hand for each service and has its headquarters in the EU, the EEA or Switzerland; for each service the best-scoring one counts. 'Same category' counts any European vendor of the same type in that category, selected or not. A selected list can be longer than the 8 alternatives the vendor page shows.
