Bitdefender: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Bitdefender is a cybersecurity company. For consumers it offers security packages for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, including a VPN, scam protection and identity protection. For organisations it provides endpoint security through the GravityZone platform, complemented by an extended detection and response (XDR) platform and managed detection and response services.

Bitdefender is headquartered in Bucharest, Romania, and is privately held. Founder Florin Talpeș is CEO and main shareholder; the UK fund Vitruvian Partners took a minority stake in 2017. In October 2025 Bitdefender announced that GravityZone is also hosted on OVHcloud SecNumCloud in France (Roubaix, Gravelines and Strasbourg). In that set-up, Bitdefender says customer and configuration data, security events and telemetry are not accessed, transferred or processed outside the EU. Partners and MSPs can also manage this variant for their customers. The sources do not state which region the standard console runs in. The software is proprietary.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Bitdefender

Bitdefender is headquartered in RO and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Bitdefender scores best on data residency.

Bitdefender is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Bitdefender together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
