CargoWise: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

CargoWise is the logistics software platform of WiseTech Global. It covers international freight forwarding, customs and compliance, international e-commerce, warehousing, landside and drayage operations, transport, carrier connectivity and parcel shipping. Users include freight forwarders, customs brokers, warehouse operators, carriers and drayage operators. With CargoWise Neo, their own customers get self-service access. WiseTech presents CargoWise as a single, integrated platform.

WiseTech Global is an Australian company, listed on the Australian Securities Exchange since 2016, so CargoWise has no European parent. According to published reports on WiseTech's privacy help centre and SOC 3 report, customer environments run in data centres in locations including Germany (Hamburg), the United States and Australia. The data processing addendum permits international transfers, so data location is partly a contractual matter. CargoWise is not open source. European organisations should have the vendor confirm which region their production and recovery environments use.

Why digital sovereignty matters with CargoWise

CargoWise is headquartered in AU, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

CargoWise hosts data in EU, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

CargoWise is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs CargoWise together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
