Fibaro: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Fibaro is a manufacturer of wireless smart home systems, founded in 2010 and based in Poland. Its Home Center controller works on the Z-Wave standard and lets users manage connected sensors, thermostats and other devices through a computer interface or a smartphone app. The Home Center 3 also supports ZigBee, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. The controller is a hardware unit that is installed in the home or building.

Fibar Group S.A. is the Polish company behind the brand. In 2018 Nice S.p.A., an Italian group based in Oderzo, acquired its entire share capital, so the parent company is in Italy and not in the United States, although the deal also included a US subsidiary. For a European organisation, both the operating company and the parent remain inside the EU. Organisations considering the system should still check the manufacturer's current terms for any cloud or app connection.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Fibaro

Fibaro is headquartered in PL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in IT, also within Europe.

Fibaro runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Fibaro is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Fibaro together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
