Genode is an open-source toolkit for building component-based operating systems with a focus on security. Developers assemble their own systems from building blocks such as device drivers, system services and applications, with capability-based security, microkernel design and sandboxing as core concepts. The framework scales from small embedded devices to general-purpose computing. The maker also offers Sculpt OS, a downloadable operating system built on the framework.
The framework is maintained by Genode Labs GmbH, which gives postal and visiting addresses in Dresden, Germany. The project is released under the GNU Affero General Public License version 3. For applications that need more permissive terms, the company offers commercial licences together with consulting and support. Because the code is open and runs locally, a European organisation can audit it and operate it without depending on a foreign cloud. The website does not describe the company's ownership and describes no hosted service.
