Google Cloud Translation is a translation service from Google Cloud that you call through an API. It comes in two editions: Basic, with the standard neural machine translation model, and Advanced, which adds a translation LLM, glossaries, document translation, batch translation and model customisation. Organisations use it to translate text and documents inside their own applications. It runs only as a managed cloud service operated by Google.
Google Cloud is part of Google LLC, a subsidiary of Alphabet headquartered in the United States, so US jurisdiction and the CLOUD Act apply. By default the API uses the global endpoint. With the Advanced edition you can select multi-regional endpoints for the EU or the US, and according to Google data at rest and machine-learning processing then stay within that continent; only the pre-trained model is available there. Google Cloud offers a data processing addendum that covers the GDPR. There is no self-hosted option and the service is proprietary. Organisations that do not want to send text to a US provider should look at European translation services.
