Homey: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Homey is a smart home platform made by Athom B.V. Users control and automate devices from many brands in one app, with scenes, dashboards and apps built by the developer community. It is sold as a local hub (Homey Pro and Homey Pro mini), as a cloud service (Homey Cloud) and as a self-hosted server. According to the website, Athom does not sell user data and does not serve advertising.

Athom is based in Enschede, the Netherlands. Since July 2024, LG Electronics, a South Korean group headquartered in Seoul, has held a majority stake, and LG has announced it will acquire the remaining shares within three years. Athom says it still operates independently of LG. The Homey website does not say where Homey Cloud data is stored. Organisations that want automation data to stay on their own equipment can use a local Homey hub or the self-hosted server.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Homey

Homey is headquartered in NL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in KR. Foreign control undermines part of the certainty a European headquarters offers.

Homey runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Homey is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Homey together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
