Mercator: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Mercator is an open-source web application for mapping an organisation's information system. It is based on the mapping guide of the French cybersecurity agency ANSSI and is aimed at CISOs, IT managers and technical teams. According to its developer, the map covers seven views, from supplier contracts and the GDPR register of processing activities down to physical infrastructure. Mercator offers reports, export to Excel, CSV and PDF, a REST API and role-based access with LDAP or Active Directory authentication. You install it yourself, for example with Docker.

Mercator is maintained by Sourcentis, a limited-liability company in Luxembourg that also offers professional support and custom development. The source code is on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 licence. Sourcentis states that it offers no cloud service for Mercator: the software runs on your own infrastructure and no data goes to the developer. That suits organisations that want to keep information-system data within Europe and without an external SaaS provider. The project also appears in French public-sector free-software catalogues.
