Microsoft Translator: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Microsoft Translator is a translation service from Microsoft with three parts. The personal apps translate speech, text, menus, signs, websites and documents, including offline. For businesses, Microsoft offers text and speech translation through the Translator API and the Speech service, part of Azure AI Services. For education there is live captioning and cross-language understanding in the classroom. The service is delivered as apps and as a cloud API.

Microsoft is headquartered in Redmond in the United States and is subject to US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act. For the Translator API, the endpoint chosen determines where a request is processed: the Europe endpoint uses France Central or West Europe, and Switzerland has its own regions. The global endpoint uses the closest available datacenter and, during a datacenter failure, may process a request outside the originating geography. According to Microsoft, text translation does not store customer data. European organisations therefore need to choose a regional endpoint deliberately.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Microsoft Translator

Microsoft Translator is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Microsoft Translator hosts data in EU, CH, US, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Microsoft Translator is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Microsoft Translator together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
