ResourceSpace: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

ResourceSpace is a digital asset management (DAM) platform that lets organisations organise, manage, integrate and share digital files such as photos, video and audio. It offers search, metadata and AI tools, approval workflows, branding, usage reporting, secure share links and public portals, automatic file conversion and an open API. Security features include single sign-on and multi-factor authentication. You can take ResourceSpace as a hosted service from Montala or install it on your own servers.

ResourceSpace is released as open source and offered by Montala Limited, a UK company in Watchfield, Oxfordshire, which provides support, development, hosting and consultancy and is fully employee-owned. According to Montala, its hosted systems run in data centres in London's Docklands, that is, in the United Kingdom. If you self-host, you decide entirely where the data resides, including within the EU; a self-installed system then goes without Montala's support.

Why digital sovereignty matters with ResourceSpace

ResourceSpace is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so ResourceSpace scores best on data residency.

ResourceSpace is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs ResourceSpace together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
