Aleph Alpha is a German provider of enterprise AI for governments and regulated industries, with a focus on sovereign AI. Its offering comprises specialised language models, such as Kolibri, solutions for business-specific domains, a platform for building and scaling secure AI applications, and forward-deployed services inside the customer's organisation. Named customers include public authorities and industrial companies.
Aleph Alpha was founded in 2019 and is based in Heidelberg. Schwarz Gruppe and the Dieter Schwarz Foundation invested in 2023. In April 2026 it was announced that Canada's Cohere would acquire Aleph Alpha, and a definitive agreement followed on 16 September 2026. The combined company will operate as Cohere, with headquarters in Berlin and Toronto and Heidelberg as a research centre. The agreement still awaits regulatory approval. Cohere intends to deliver sovereign AI with Schwarz Gruppe on STACKIT. A European customer should therefore follow the ownership change, because a foreign parent company can alter the jurisdiction that applies.
