Argos Translate: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Argos Translate is an open-source library for offline machine translation, written in Python. It uses neural OpenNMT models and can be used as a Python library, from the command line or in a graphical desktop application. Language packages are downloaded as .argosmodel files and installed once; after that, text is translated on the user's own computer. The library is released under the MIT licence and is available through PyPI and its source repository. It can replace cloud translation services for texts an organisation does not want to outsource.

The library is maintained by Argos Open Technologies, LLC, a US limited liability company. No parent company is named. Because translation happens locally, text does not have to leave the organisation's systems, which suits European organisations that do not want to send content to a foreign cloud service. The company also offers managed hosting of an API server, but the project pages do not state where that server runs.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Argos Translate

Argos Translate is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Argos Translate hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Argos Translate is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Argos Translate together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
