Codility: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Codility is a platform for technical skills testing and structured technical interviews, used by engineering leaders and talent acquisition teams. Its product lines are Screen, which lets teams filter candidates with realistic coding problems that candidates complete on their own schedule; Interview, which runs structured technical interviews in VS Code; and Skills Intelligence, which maps the capabilities of an engineering organisation. The service is delivered through the browser, so candidates do not need to install software.

The operating company is Codility Limited, registered in England and Wales with its registered office in London, so the contracting party sits outside the EU and EEA. Codility's trust centre states that customers select EU or US data residency when they sign the contract. The company states that it is GDPR compliant and lists SOC 2 and ISO 27001 certifications. Its privacy notice says personal data is not shared outside the Codility Group without explicit consent. For a European organisation, the data residency choice has to be fixed in the contract, and the UK seat falls outside EU jurisdiction.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Codility

Codility is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Codility hosts data in EU, US. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Codility is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Codility together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
