DigiCert UltraDNS: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

DigiCert UltraDNS is a managed authoritative DNS service that lets organisations manage DNS records, automate DNS changes and steer traffic by geography, latency or availability. According to DigiCert, it includes failover and active-active redundancy, DNSSEC, built-in DDoS protection and automation of domain control validation for certificates. It can run as primary or secondary DNS; UltraDNS² is an independent secondary anycast network. The product was previously called Vercara UltraDNS and is delivered as SaaS.

DigiCert completed its acquisition of Vercara on 23 September 2024. DigiCert is based in Lehi, Utah (US) and is privately held, backed by Clearlake Capital, Crosspoint Capital and TA Associates. As a US provider, the service falls under US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act. No specific data centre locations for customer data are published; DNS zones are answered through a global anycast network. European organisations that need to know where zone data is held should ask DigiCert.

Is DigiCert UltraDNS one of many dependencies?

Score your whole stack in about three minutes. Free, no account needed.

Why digital sovereignty matters with DigiCert UltraDNS

DigiCert UltraDNS is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

DigiCert UltraDNS hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

DigiCert UltraDNS is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs DigiCert UltraDNS together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
