Knot Resolver: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Knot Resolver is an open-source caching recursive DNS resolver. Its core is written in C and LuaJIT and kept small; additional features are optional modules that you can extend in C or Lua. The software supports DNSSEC validation and DNS privacy features and, according to its developers, scales from large resolver farms down to home routers. It is software you run yourself: you install it from a Linux distribution package or from source on your own servers, and it is not a hosted service.

Knot Resolver is developed by CZ.NIC, the Czech non-profit association based in Prague that operates the .cz domain registry. The source code is freely available under a GPL licence and can therefore be inspected. Because you run the resolver yourself, you decide where queries and cache data are processed; there is no vendor storing data in another jurisdiction. For a European organisation that wants to keep DNS resolution under its own control, this is an option with no foreign owner.
