Diwise: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Diwise is an open-source IoT communication platform and City Information platform. It receives sensor data from several sources and can control physical control systems, so that business systems do not depend on specific sensor types or network technologies. It is modular and uses FIWARE and NGSI-LD data models. It is server software that you install yourself, for example with Docker Compose, aimed at municipalities and other organisations with sensor networks.

Diwise comes from Sweden: the project grew out of a Vinnova-funded project and the GitHub organisation is based in Sundsvall. No separate legal entity is named as responsible for the project. The source code is released under the AGPL-3.0 licence and is actively updated; the repositories were last changed on 13 October 2026. According to the project site, the platform runs on-premises or in a Swedish cloud. If you run it yourself, sensor and management data stay within your own environment.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Diwise

Diwise is headquartered in SE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Diwise scores best on data residency.

Diwise is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Diwise together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
