Eclipse IoT: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Eclipse IoT is the IoT open-source community within the Eclipse Foundation. It brings together projects for IoT, edge computing and related uses. Well-known parts include Eclipse Mosquitto, a lightweight MQTT broker for MQTT 5.0, 3.1.1 and 3.1 that also runs on small boards; Eclipse Hono, which connects devices to back-end applications through a single API over HTTP, MQTT, AMQP and CoAP; and Eclipse Ditto for digital twins. It is not one product with one service, but a collection of building blocks that you select, install and operate yourself. The projects are released under open-source licences, such as the Eclipse Public License.

The Eclipse Foundation is an international not-for-profit association chartered in the European Union (AISBL), headquartered in Brussels. Because Eclipse IoT is not a hosted service, you decide where your data runs and who operates the infrastructure. The source code is public, so you are not tied to a single vendor. For a European organisation this does require in-house operating capacity or a partner that provides support.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Eclipse IoT

Eclipse IoT is headquartered in BE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Eclipse IoT scores best on data residency.

Eclipse IoT is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Eclipse IoT together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
