Eclipse Mosquitto: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Eclipse Mosquitto is an open source message broker that implements the MQTT protocol in versions 5.0, 3.1.1 and 3.1. Devices and applications exchange messages through publish and subscribe. The open source edition is designed to be installed and run on the user's own servers or devices. Mosquitto is distributed under the Eclipse Public License and the Eclipse Distribution License. Cedalo, which drives the project's development, also offers a commercial Pro edition with cloud or on-premises deployment.

Mosquitto is a project of the Eclipse Foundation, a non-profit corporation based in Brussels, Belgium. Because the software runs on infrastructure the user selects, there is no hosting by the vendor, and a European organisation decides itself where messages and data are processed and stored. It is therefore an option in which the organisation controls data location, provided it operates and secures the broker itself.
