Elastic Security: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Elastic Security is the security offering built on the Elastic platform and Elasticsearch. It combines a SIEM with AI-driven alert correlation, endpoint security through Elastic Defend, XDR and cloud security on one data model, and workflow automation. It is delivered as Elastic Cloud Serverless, as Elastic Cloud Hosted on major cloud providers, or self-managed on your own servers or Kubernetes.

Elastic N.V. is incorporated in the Netherlands; its annual report calls it a distributed company without a principal executive office and gives a San Francisco address for shareholder communications. Elastic Cloud runs on AWS, Google Cloud and Azure, with European regions such as Frankfurt, Ireland, Paris and the Netherlands. Elasticsearch and Kibana source code is available under AGPLv3, SSPL 1.0 and the Elastic License 2.0, which applies to the default distribution; only AGPLv3 is an OSI-approved open-source licence. Self-managed deployment keeps data in your own environment.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Elastic Security

Elastic Security is headquartered in NL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Elastic Security hosts data in EU, US. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Elastic Security is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Elastic Security together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
