Eliona: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Eliona is a platform for smart building and infrastructure management that brings data from IT, IoT and OT systems together in one environment. It connects building management systems, sensors and protocols such as BACnet, KNX, Modbus, OPC UA and MQTT. Features include dashboards and KPIs, alarms with rules and escalations, ticketing, asset management, analyses and reports, floor plans and BIM models (IFC), with AI functions built on the data. The platform is built on Docker and can run in the cloud or on premises; edge nodes act as gateways.

Eliona is developed by IoTEC AG in Winterthur, Switzerland. According to its website, Eliona has been a brand of ABB Asea Brown Boveri Ltd. since the end of January 2026 and is sold through Leicom IQ AG as an official ABB partner. The website does not state where the cloud service is hosted, so ask the vendor. With an on-premises installation you choose the location yourself. Switzerland is not an EU member state but is an EFTA country with an EU adequacy decision.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Eliona

Eliona is headquartered in Switzerland and falls under Swiss law, including the revised Swiss data protection act. Switzerland is not an EU member, but the European Commission recognises its level of data protection as adequate. Its Swiss headquarters does not by itself bring it under US legislation such as the CLOUD Act.

Eliona runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Eliona is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Eliona together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
