Emoncms: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Emoncms is a web application for processing, logging and visualising energy, temperature and other environmental data. Users send measurements through an API or from monitoring hardware such as OpenEnergyMonitor's emonPi, and view them in graphs, dashboards and apps. It is intended for monitoring electricity, solar, storage and heat pumps. You can install it on a Raspberry Pi, a home computer or a web server, or use the hosted service at emoncms.org.

Emoncms is part of the OpenEnergyMonitor project and is released under the GNU Affero General Public License (AGPL). The emoncms.org service is run by Megni, trading as OpenEnergyMonitor, based in Caernarfon, Wales (United Kingdom). According to its privacy policy, the emoncms.org servers are located in the UK and UK GDPR applies. If you host it yourself, your measurement data stays on your own device; the documentation covers installation, backup and restore.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Emoncms

Emoncms is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Emoncms hosts data outside the EU (OTHER). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Emoncms is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Emoncms together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
