SNAP, the Sentinel Application Platform, is a toolbox for processing and analysing Earth observation data, in particular imagery from the Sentinel satellites of the Copernicus programme. It provides a common architecture for the Sentinel toolboxes, a graph processing framework for building chains of processing steps, and tools for band arithmetic, reprojection and statistics over regions of interest. SNAP is offered as a desktop application that is installed and run on the user's own computer or infrastructure.
The European Space Agency (ESA) hosts the project on its STEP platform, and development is carried out with partners including Brockmann Consult in Germany and C-S in France. ESA is headquartered in Paris, and the source code is published on GitHub under the GNU General Public License version 3. Because SNAP runs locally and can be built from its public source code, European organisations can use it without sending satellite data to a cloud provider and keep control of the processing themselves.
