Exein: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Exein is an Italian cybersecurity company for embedded and IoT devices. Its Exein Runtime agent is embedded in device firmware and uses kernel-level eBPF techniques to monitor system calls, file system and network activity on Linux and RTOS systems, detecting and blocking attacks. The company's platform also includes Exein Analyzer.

Exein S.p.A. is headquartered in Rome, Italy, and has offices in Germany, Taiwan and the United States. Its privacy notice names Exein S.p.A. as data controller and refers to the GDPR (Regulation (EU) 2016/679). The notice says personal data is processed within the European Union and, where appropriate, outside it, without naming hosting countries or cloud providers. Because the runtime agent runs on the device itself, the protection is part of the firmware a manufacturer ships, while the vendor's online analysis portal is a separate service whose hosting location is not publicly stated.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Exein

Exein is headquartered in IT and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Exein runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Exein is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Exein together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
