F-Secure: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

F-Secure is a Finnish consumer cybersecurity company. Its products include F-Secure Total, which combines antivirus, VPN, identity protection and scam protection, and stand-alone Internet Security, VPN, ID Protection and Scam Protection. F-Secure also works with partners such as carriers, retailers, banks and insurers that add online security to their own offerings; according to its half-year report, this partner channel, including embedded security sold through communication service providers, is its main growth focus.

F-Secure is headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, and listed on Nasdaq Helsinki. A 2022 demerger split off the corporate security business as WithSecure, so F-Secure now concentrates on consumers and partners rather than enterprise endpoint protection. The sources consulted name no foreign parent, describe no open-source edition and do not state where service data is processed; check the product's privacy notice.

Why digital sovereignty matters with F-Secure

F-Secure is headquartered in FI and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so F-Secure scores best on data residency.

F-Secure is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs F-Secure together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
