FIWARE: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

FIWARE is an open-source framework of platform components for smart solutions, for example in cities, industry and agriculture. The components are listed in a public catalogue and include context information management through a common API. One example is Orion-LD, a context broker that implements the NGSI-LD standard published by ETSI and is licensed under AGPL-3.0. There is also the Smart Data Models programme for standardised data models. FIWARE aims to make solutions portable and interoperable and to avoid vendor lock-in. It is not a hosted service but a collection of software that you install and run yourself, optionally with a commercial partner from the ecosystem.

FIWARE is backed by the FIWARE Foundation e.V., an independent non-profit organisation constituted under German law (an eingetragener Verein). Because you run the components yourself, you decide where your data resides and which jurisdiction applies to it. Open source code and open standards make it possible to switch between implementations. For a European organisation this does call for in-house technical operating capacity or a support partner.

Why digital sovereignty matters with FIWARE

FIWARE is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so FIWARE scores best on data residency.

FIWARE is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs FIWARE together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
