Fortinet FortiNAC: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Fortinet FortiNAC is a network access control (NAC) product. It gives visibility into the devices connected to an enterprise network, including IT, IoT, OT and medical equipment, and enforces access policies. Capabilities include agentless device detection and profiling, network segmentation, onboarding of BYOD, guest and contractor devices, and automated response to anomalous behaviour. It integrates with the Fortinet Security Fabric and, according to Fortinet, can also control network equipment from other manufacturers. It is delivered as a hardware appliance or as a virtual machine.

Fortinet, Inc. is headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, and listed on the Nasdaq, so US law, including the CLOUD Act, applies to it. Because FortiNAC runs on premises, device inventories and access logs stay in your own environment, for example in a European data centre. The software is proprietary and not open source. For a European organisation, the main points to weigh are the US parent company and the dependence on Fortinet licensing and updates.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Fortinet FortiNAC

Fortinet FortiNAC is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Fortinet FortiNAC runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Fortinet FortiNAC is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Fortinet FortiNAC together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
