GlobalSign is a certificate authority and provider of digital identity and security services. It issues TLS/SSL and S/MIME certificates, offers managed PKI and cloud-based certificate management, and provides digital signing and identity for IoT devices. Since 2018 GlobalSign has been recognised in the EU as a qualified trust service provider (QTSP) under eIDAS. The services are delivered as a cloud service.
GlobalSign NV/SA is a Belgian company whose policy authority and compliance functions are in Leuven. It belongs to Japan's GMO group (GMO GlobalSign Holdings and GMO Internet), which means the ultimate parent is outside the EU and the company is under Japanese ownership. Operations are spread internationally: according to an auditor's directory entry, there are also offices and production systems in countries such as the United Kingdom, Singapore and Japan. The software is not open source. A European organisation buying certificates or electronic signatures therefore contracts with a Belgian entity, but should also take the international processing and the Japanese ownership into account.
