H5P is a free technology, released under the MIT licence, for creating, sharing and reusing interactive HTML5 content such as interactive videos, presentations and games. A web browser is enough to create or view content. You can self-host H5P through plugins for WordPress, Moodle, Drupal and other systems, or use the paid cloud service H5P.com, which connects through LTI to learning platforms such as Canvas, Brightspace, Blackboard and Moodle.
H5P is developed by H5P Group AS, a company whose staff are mainly based in Norway. In July 2024 the Canadian company D2L, based in Kitchener, announced the acquisition of H5P Group, so the ultimate owner is Canadian. According to the H5P community, H5P.com runs on servers in the US, the EU and Australia with a worldwide CDN and offers a data processing agreement, while the free test site H5P.org runs on a single server in the EU and offers no data processing agreement. Because the software is open source, a European organisation can run the plugins on its own infrastructure.
