IBM Envizi: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

IBM Envizi is a sustainability data management platform for ESG reporting, emissions accounting and decarbonisation planning. According to IBM, it covers Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas accounting, financed emissions, reporting against several ESG frameworks and target tracking. Data is ingested automatically from ERP, IoT, utility and supplier sources, and an Emissions API lets other applications use its calculations. Users work in a web-based platform with audit trails and data health checks.

IBM acquired Envizi in January 2022, so the product is operated by a company headquartered in the United States. With a US parent, US legal requests, such as those under the CLOUD Act, can in principle reach data held by the provider, wherever it is stored. Envizi is proprietary software, and no self-hosted option is described. IBM's public product pages do not state hosting regions, so a European organisation should confirm data location and subprocessors in the contract.

Why digital sovereignty matters with IBM Envizi

IBM Envizi is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

IBM Envizi hosts data in EU, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

IBM Envizi is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs IBM Envizi together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
