Icecast is free, open-source server software for streaming multimedia over the internet. It delivers audio and video streams in formats such as Ogg Vorbis, Opus, WebM and MP3, and is used to run an internet radio station or a private jukebox. It is installed and operated on the user's own server and distributed under the GNU General Public License version 2.
Icecast is maintained by Xiph.Org, a non-profit organisation based in Somerville, Massachusetts, United States. Its source code is published on GitHub, and bug reports are directed to Xiph's GitLab instance. The project provides server software rather than a vendor-operated cloud, so the operator decides where streams and listener data are hosted. The foundation that maintains the software is US-based, but the software runs on infrastructure the user chooses. For a European organisation, Icecast is an open alternative to proprietary streaming platforms, and security and operation remain with the organisation itself.
