Last.fm: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Last.fm is a music service that records what users listen to, builds a listening history and uses it to recommend new music and events. The service is operated by Last.fm Limited, a private limited company registered in London and incorporated in 2002. It is used through the website.

CBS acquired Last.fm in 2007, and the service later became part of the Paramount group, which subsequently became Paramount Skydance. In May 2026 the company announced that its ownership had changed and that it is independent again, but the new owner is not named publicly. The privacy policy states that the company is based in the United Kingdom and that personal data may be transferred to the United States under standard contractual clauses. The service is not open source and cannot be self-hosted.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Last.fm

Last.fm is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Last.fm hosts data outside the EU (OTHER). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Last.fm is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Last.fm together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
