Libraesva: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Libraesva Email Security is a secure email gateway that protects mailboxes against phishing, business email compromise, account takeover, malware and spam. According to the vendor it uses semantic AI that analyses the intent of a message, sandboxing and inspection of attachments, and active URL analysis, and it integrates with Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and Exchange. The product started as ESVA, an email security virtual appliance. The vendor says it runs locally or in a cloud of the customer's choosing, and the company also offers email archiving, phishing awareness training and DMARC protection.

Libraesva is headquartered in Lecco, Italy, with offices in London and the United States. In February 2025 the growth equity firm PSG acquired a majority stake, according to the adviser on the transaction. Because the customer can run the gateway locally or in its own cloud, mail processing can stay within an EU location of its choice. The software is proprietary and not open source. The vendor's pages do not name specific hosting regions for its own cloud offering.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Libraesva

Libraesva is headquartered in IT and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in US. Foreign control undermines part of the certainty a European headquarters offers.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Libraesva scores best on data residency.

Libraesva is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Libraesva together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
