Linphone: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Linphone is an open-source communications solution for voice and video calls, chat and video conferencing over SIP/VoIP. It consists of a softphone for Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and Linux, the Liblinphone SDK that developers use to build communication into their own apps or embedded systems, and the Flexisip server for account management, call routing, chat, conferencing and presence. Organisations can host the software themselves, have it customised, or deploy it as a white-label product. According to the vendor, modules are available for ZRTP call encryption, end-to-end encryption of messages and conferences, and a quantum-resistant module.

Linphone is developed by Belledonne Communications, based in Grenoble, France. The software is dual-licensed: free under an open-source licence (GPL or AGPL, depending on the component) or under a paid proprietary licence for closed-source use. Linphone's free SIP account service runs on OVH servers in France and Germany, according to its privacy policy. Because the source code is open and the server can be installed independently, a European organisation can keep the whole chain, including the hosting location, under its own control.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Linphone

Linphone is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Linphone scores best on data residency.

Linphone is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Linphone together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
