Litmus Edge: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Litmus Edge is an industrial edge data platform from Litmus Automation Inc. It connects industrial assets, models operational data and runs edge applications, analytics and AI close to the machines. Litmus Edge runs on an edge gateway or industrial PC, on virtual machines (VMware, Hyper-V) at plant level, and in containers and Kubernetes for multi-site rollouts. Litmus Edge Manager provides central management of deployments across sites, and a free Developer Edition is offered.

Litmus is headquartered in Santa Clara, California, with offices in Toronto, Munich, Tokyo and Pune, and the software is proprietary. Because Litmus Edge is installed on the customer's own hardware or virtual machines, operational data can stay at the plant, and the vendor describes policy-based control over which data leaves the site. Its public pages do not state data residency for cloud components. As a US company, Litmus remains the supplier of software, updates and licences; European organisations should check the contract terms for any cloud integrations.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Litmus Edge

Litmus Edge is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Litmus Edge runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Litmus Edge is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Litmus Edge together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
