Losant: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Losant is an enterprise IoT platform for building connected solutions. It offers a low-code visual workflow engine that collects and integrates data from devices and systems, customisable dashboards, API integration, multi-tenancy, provisioning and digital twins, plus an edge agent that connects to PLCs and other systems. In February 2026 SUSE announced the acquisition of Losant, which becomes part of the SUSE Edge portfolio. Losant can be used as a fully managed cloud, installed in the customer's own public cloud account (AWS, Google Cloud or Azure), or run on-premises.

Losant is based in Cincinnati, USA, and is now owned by SUSE, a European enterprise open-source company. The fully managed cloud is hosted on Google Cloud; the public page names no regions and does not mention Europe. Losant is currently proprietary, although SUSE has said it plans to open-source the technology. The own-cloud and on-premises options let a European organisation keep data on infrastructure of its choice.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Losant

Losant is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model. The ultimate owner is based in DE, also within Europe.

Losant hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Losant is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Losant together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
