Lunar: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Lunar is a Danish digital bank without branches, operating entirely through a mobile app and founded in 2015. It offers personal accounts with a digital card, joint accounts, savings, accounts for children and teenagers, loans, investing in stocks, funds and ETFs as well as crypto, and budgeting overviews. Lunar also provides business solutions and, through Moonrise, a Banking-as-a-Service unit that supplies bank and payment infrastructure to partners. The app is available in Denmark, Sweden and Norway.

Lunar Bank A/S is headquartered in Aarhus. Since 2019 it has held a European banking licence from the Danish regulator Finanstilsynet, which supervises it; deposits are covered by the Danish Guarantee Fund. No foreign parent company is named. The software is proprietary and available only as a managed service. For a European organisation this means a banking relationship under Danish and European supervision, without control over the underlying systems.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Lunar

Lunar is headquartered in DK and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Lunar scores best on data residency.

Lunar is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Lunar together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
