Mage-OS: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Mage-OS is an e-commerce platform for online shops, built on Magento Open Source. It is an independent, community-driven distribution that, according to the project, keeps full compatibility with the Magento ecosystem so that existing Magento shops and extensions can be migrated. It provides the usual shop functions: catalogue, cart, checkout and administration. It is server software that you install yourself or through a hosting provider. The latest release on the website, 3.5.0, is a security release dated 8 September 2026.

Mage-OS is maintained by the Mage-OS Association, a nonprofit based in Poznań, Poland, and is not affiliated with Adobe or Magento. The code is published on GitHub under a dual licence, the Open Software License 3.0 and the Academic Free License 3.0. Because you host the software yourself, you decide where shop and customer data are stored, and no data is sent to the maintainer. The website does not describe a hosted service run by the association.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Mage-OS
