Mender: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Mender is an over-the-air (OTA) software update platform for IoT and embedded devices. It updates full OS images, applications, containers, AI models and peripherals on Linux and real-time operating systems, including air-gapped devices. Mender is delivered as a hosted service, or customers can run the open-source server on their own infrastructure. The vendor states that it is built on open source, and the client is licensed under Apache 2.0.

Mender is developed by Northern.tech, which lists offices in Oslo, Palo Alto and Shanghai. Hosted Mender runs as separate regional instances in the US (hosted.mender.io) and the EU (eu.hosted.mender.io); the documentation states that the EU instance is GDPR-compliant. Artifacts are distributed through Cloudflare's network, and European Enterprise customers can ask sales to keep artifacts within Europe. Self-hosting gives a European organisation full control over device data and update artifacts.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Mender

Mender is headquartered in NO, which falls under the GDPR through the European Economic Area. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Mender hosts data in EU, US. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Mender is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Mender together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
