NetBird is a zero trust networking platform positioned as a replacement for traditional VPNs. It builds an identity-based, WireGuard-based peer-to-peer network that connects users, devices, servers and cloud or on-premises resources. Administrators provision users and groups from an identity provider, segment the network, define access policies, enforce multi-factor authentication and device posture checks, and stream events to SIEM platforms. Clients run on Linux, Windows, macOS, mobile, Docker and routers. NetBird is available as a hosted service, NetBird Cloud, or as a self-hosted installation on the customer's own Linux server.
The vendor, NetBird GmbH, is based in Berlin. The platform is open source under a BSD-3 licence according to the vendor, so the code can be reviewed. NetBird's privacy notice states that personal data is processed in the EU/EEA and names AWS in Luxembourg for application hosting; it also lists some US-based providers, for example for authentication. Self-hosting lets a European organisation run the control plane on infrastructure and in a location it chooses.
