Network Solutions: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Network Solutions is a domain name registrar that also offers web hosting, web design, search engine marketing, SSL certificates and email hosting. It was founded in 1979 in Washington, D.C., as a technology consulting firm. From the early 1990s it ran the .com, .net and .org registry under US government contracts; after ICANN was formed in 1998, the registry function and retail registration were separated. In April 2025, Web.com was merged into Network Solutions. The services are delivered online as SaaS and hosting platforms and are not open source.

Network Solutions, LLC is a subsidiary of Newfold Digital and, according to Wikipedia, is based in Jacksonville, Florida. Newfold Digital is a joint venture of the US investors Clearlake Capital and Siris Capital Group, and also runs the Bluehost brand. The company pages do not name data centre regions, so no European hosting location is documented. For a European organisation, a US headquarters with US investors means the provider falls under US jurisdiction; where data is stored should therefore be asked per service.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Network Solutions

Network Solutions is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Network Solutions hosts data in EU, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Network Solutions is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Network Solutions together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
