Nightscout is an open-source web application that shows readings from a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) online, so that parents, carers and family members can follow the values on a phone or computer. The project began in 2013, when a software engineer built software to send CGM data to the cloud for his newly diagnosed child. It is released under the GNU Affero General Public License version 3, and each user or group runs its own instance.
The Nightscout Foundation, which maintains the project, is a US nonprofit with 501(c)(3) status, so its seat is in the United States. Nightscout has no central vendor cloud; data is stored on the infrastructure on which each instance runs. A European organisation that deploys it in Europe can therefore keep the data in Europe. The project publishes no GDPR commitment or data processing agreement, because it is software rather than a service. As open-source software it is an alternative to proprietary diabetes data platforms.
