Njalla is a privacy-focused domain service started by Peter Sunde, a co-founder of The Pirate Bay. It is not a registrar in the usual sense: it buys domains from ordinary registrars and acts as a privacy layer between the registrar and the customer. Njalla is listed as the registered owner, while the customer receives full usage rights under an agreement and can ask for the domain to be transferred out. Every domain includes managed DNS, and payment is possible with, among others, Bitcoin and PayPal. The company also offers hosting and VPN services.
At its launch in 2017, press reports said the service is run by 1337 LLC, based in Nevis in the Caribbean. The company is therefore located outside both the EU and the US. The software is not open source. For European organisations, legal title to the domain sits with a non-European intermediary, and the customer's rights rest on a contract.
