Olfeo: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Olfeo is a French publisher of web filtering and secure web gateway software. Businesses, local authorities and healthcare institutions use it to control employees' internet use and to protect information systems from web-borne threats. The product is available as a SaaS subscription or as software for on-premises infrastructure. Olfeo was founded in 2003 and has its headquarters in Paris.

Since June 2025 Olfeo has been wholly owned by Ekinops, a French telecommunications solutions provider listed on Euronext Paris, through its holding company Oscar SAS. The SaaS service was developed in France. A client case study published by Orange Business says that Olfeo needed a cloud hosted on European servers and chose an offering from Orange Business, a French operator. Customers with stricter requirements can opt for the on-premises version, which keeps web-traffic data inside their own environment. For a European organisation, the French seat, French ownership and European hosting are the points to check against its own requirements, including the contract terms of the chosen hosting option.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Olfeo

Olfeo is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Olfeo runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Olfeo is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Olfeo together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
