Omeka is an open-source platform that lets museums, archives, libraries and research projects publish digital collections and build online exhibits. Omeka S is designed for institutions that share one pool of resources across several websites, and supports linked open data, themes and modules. Omeka Classic is aimed at individual projects and educators. Both versions are installed on a web server of the user's choice. Those who prefer not to run their own installation can use the hosted service Omeka.net.
Omeka is developed by the Corporation for Digital Scholarship, which operates as Digital Scholar, a non-profit with an office in Falls Church, Virginia. The software is released under the GNU General Public License version 3, so European organisations can download, inspect and run it on their own infrastructure. Omeka.net is operated from offices in the United States, and its terms of service do not name a fixed storage location for data. A European institution that manages sensitive collections can therefore choose self-hosting, which keeps the data under its own control.
