OpenBao is an open-source system for secrets management. It stores and distributes credentials, certificates and other sensitive data, encrypts data in transit and at rest, and offers encryption as a service with centralised key management. It is a community fork of HashiCorp Vault, created after HashiCorp changed Vault's licence, and it continues under the MPL-2.0 licence. Organisations install and run it on their own infrastructure, so the software can be deployed on premises or in a cloud they choose.
OpenBao is managed by the Linux Foundation's OpenSSF. The Linux Foundation is a non-profit organisation under US law, which is relevant for European organisations weighing governance and support. The code is developed in the open by a community that includes companies contributing code and sponsoring the project. Because the software is operated by the adopting organisation, the data it protects stays where that organisation places it, and the source code can be audited by any party.
