openLCA: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

openLCA is a desktop application for life-cycle assessment (LCA) and product footprint modelling, from simple to complex models. GreenDelta has developed it since 2006. It is used for sustainability assessments and carbon footprint studies. Alongside the desktop version, the LCA Collaboration Server is a free server application that complements openLCA, with support available on request. The source code is published on GitHub under the Mozilla Public License 2.0.

GreenDelta GmbH is based in Berlin, so the software and its maintenance sit within the EU. Because openLCA runs on the user's own computer or server, the data stays under the control of the organisation, which makes it a self-hosted option for European users. The web tool onlineLCA is developed by GreenDelta for large-scale LCA calculations. The public pages do not state where its servers are located, so buyers should check this before entering confidential product data. The open licence allows organisations to inspect, modify and share the code.

Why digital sovereignty matters with openLCA

openLCA is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so openLCA scores best on data residency.

openLCA is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs openLCA together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
