OWASP dep-scan is a software composition analysis (SCA) tool: it checks a project's dependencies and container images against known vulnerabilities, security advisories and licence restrictions. It prioritises findings, performs reachability analysis for several programming languages, can generate a software bill of materials (SBOM) with vulnerability information and can produce a CSAF VEX document. Development teams use it locally or in a CI pipeline, as a command-line tool (pip, Homebrew or standalone binary), as a container image or in server mode.
According to the project, AppThreat Ltd donated it to the OWASP Foundation in August 2023. The OWASP Foundation is incorporated as a nonprofit in the United States, so the foundation hosting the project is based there. The standard version is released under the MIT licence; extra components in the full installation carry other licences. According to the README, package scanning runs locally and needs no server, so your data does not go to the maintainer. Development was co-funded through NLnet and the EU's NGI Zero programme.
