Phrase is a localisation platform for enterprises, non-profits and language service providers. It brings together a translation management system (TMS), software localisation (Strings), multimedia localisation (Studio), AI translation with routing across machine translation engines and large language models, quality estimation, workflow automation and analytics. It offers APIs, webhooks and integrations with tools such as GitHub, Figma and Contentful. It is delivered as a cloud service.
Phrase GmbH is based in Hamburg, Germany, alongside Phrase a.s. in Prague, the former Memsource. When Memsource acquired Phrase in January 2021, the US investment firm Carlyle was reported as Memsource's majority shareholder; current ownership is not stated on Phrase's own pages. Customers choose an EU data centre (AWS, Ireland) or a US data centre (AWS, US East) at sign-up; Phrase Studio runs on Google Cloud in Warsaw, the Netherlands and Iowa. Phrase does not commit to keeping data in one jurisdiction at all times, and third-party machine translation engines may process data elsewhere. The software is proprietary and not open source.
