Pocket Casts is a podcast app and service for discovering, following and playing podcasts. With an account, subscriptions and listening history sync across devices. The app is available on mobile platforms and on the web, and is delivered as a vendor-hosted service.
Pocket Casts is published by Automattic Inc., the company behind WordPress.com, which acquired the service in July 2021. Automattic is a privately held company headquartered in San Francisco, California. The privacy policy does not name countries for data storage and says that data of users in the EEA may be accessed or stored outside the EEA by Automattic, group companies and processors. For such transfers it relies on standard contractual arrangements approved by the European Commission, and it describes GDPR rights such as access, deletion and portability. As a US company, Automattic falls under US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act. A European organisation that wants to limit tracking of employees' listening habits may take this into account.
