QNX: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

QNX is a real-time operating system and hypervisor for embedded systems, used in automobiles, medical devices, programmable logic controllers, automated manufacturing and trains. Its product family includes the QNX Software Development Platform, a microkernel RTOS for safety-critical devices, and development tools. QNX runs on the customer's own hardware and is not offered as a hosted cloud service.

QNX is a division of BlackBerry Limited and is headquartered in Ottawa, Canada. The software is proprietary, so customers depend on the vendor's licence terms, update channel and long-term support rather than on source code they can modify. Because it runs on devices that the customer builds or operates, the customer's system design determines where any data is processed. For European manufacturers, the main questions are the supplier's Canadian base and the availability of support and security updates over the product's lifetime.

Why digital sovereignty matters with QNX

QNX is headquartered in CA, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

QNX runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

QNX is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs QNX together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
